TRAGEDY IN FLEMINGTON CLEANING A GUN MAN KILLS HIMSELF

Hunterdon County Prosecutor Anthony P. Kearns, III and Flemington Borough Police Chief George Becker are announcing the accidental shooting death of 75 year old Flemington resident, Frank Kern.

According to Chief Becker, “On Monday June 24th, 2013 at 7:55 AM, Flemington Borough Police Officers Bradley Bullman and Brian McNally responded to the Prospect Hills Apartments for a report of a 75-year-old male with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.  Upon arrival, officers located Frank Kern lying in his garage with a gunshot wound to his stomach. Mr. Kern was immediately taken by the Flemington Raritan Rescue Squad to a State Police Helicopter, and flown to Helene Fuld Medical Center in Trenton. Mr. Kern succumbed to complications from the wound early Tuesday morning.”
Prosecutor Kearns stated, “Detectives from the Flemington Borough Police Department and the Hunterdon County Prosecutor’s Office determined that Mr. Kern had been cleaning and disassembling his .22 caliber rifle when a single round accidentally discharged into his abdomen.”

The prosecutor added, “This is a terrible tragedy and our condolences go out to the Kern family.”

The Prosecutor and Chief took the opportunity to remind gun owners that safety is paramount when handling firearms. Always make sure guns are fully unloaded and the chamber is clear before dissembling or cleaning.
