TITLE: HUNTERDON COUNTY 4-H Invitational Market Lamb Show and Sale
The Hunterdon County Invitational 4-H Market Lamb Show and Sale was held Wednesday, August 25, 2010 at the Hunterdon County 4-H and Agriculture Fair. Judging the Show in the morning was John Eaton of Airville, PA. Mr. Fought raises Cheviot Sheep.
The grand champion lamb of the show was a 130 pound ewe lamb exhibited by Kara Riccioni of Frenchtown, NJ. Her lamb received special awards as follows: first place weight group award presented by the Rodenberger family of Riegelsville, P.A; the best Dorset sired market lamb award presented by Ruth Crommelin of Stanton, NJ; the Beth Perry Memorial Award; and the award given for the best bred and owned market lamb donated by the Garden State Sheep Breeders Association. Kara also, received recognition for being the best senior showman with an award presented by the Posberg family of Somerville, NJ. Kara’s lamb sold for $42.50 per pound to Dr. William Reynolds.
The reserve champion lamb was exhibited by Gabby Tovar of Pittstown, NJ. Gabby’s lamb weighed 122 pounds and received the award for best Suffolk sired market lamb given by Windy Acres of Pittstown, Gabby’s lamb sold for $35.00 per pound to a group that is known as “The Friends of Gabby” who are local businesses, friends and family who support Gabby in her 4-H sheep project. The members of this group are: Jablonski Farms, Robert F. DeLorenzo, Inc., Beckage Seal Coating, E&R Nursery, Equine’s Trauma Center, Hahola Farms, Mt. Salem Electrics, William & Kathleen Akers, Landscaping, Robert & Linda Runge, Thomas & Michelle Kosakowski, Alfonso Tovar, Boyden & Doris Stretch, David Poiesz, Robert Torok, Palumbo’s Garden Shop, Burkett’s (Bob Gentry) Supply Company, Champion Tire, Growmark FS LLC, Sergantsville Grain & Feed, Rug RX, Ditschman’s Ford, Clinton Watergardens, and Thomas & Kimberly Hlasney.
Dr. Reynolds also purchased lambs exhibited by Bennett Mirabito of Ringoes for $4.00 per pound; Matt Sheneman of Flemington for $3.00 per pound and Brittany Smith of Oxford, NJ for $5.00 per pound.
The third selling animal of the show was exhibited by Shannon Clifford of Bridgewater, NJ. Her lamb weighed 94 pounds, was a weight class winner and received the award for the best Hampshire sired market lamb. This lamb was purchased by Scott Sipprelle for Congress for $10.00 a pound. This lamb was then resold at the end to Liane Farms for $2.00 a pound with the proceeds going to the Hunterdon County 4-H Invitational Sheep Committee. Liane Farms also, purchased a lamb exhibited by Gina Callari of Bridgewater for $3.00 a pound.
Nicholas Horner of Lambertville exhibited a 104 wether that was purchased by Flemington Bituminous for $3.00 a pound. Nick also received the Donald Kniffen, Sr. Memorial award. Flemington Bituminous also purchased a lamb exhibited by Ben Sheneman of Flemington for $3.00 per pound.
The best beginner showman was Katherine Horner of Lambertville. She exhibited a 98 pound wether which was purchased by Erick Spronck who donated the lamb to the Flemington Food Pantry.
The intermediate showman award went to Andrew Sheneman of Flemington. Andrew exhibited a 120 pound wether which sold for $3.25 per pound to Jack Tibbets.
A total of 19 lambs were sold. 4-H sheep members participating in the sale were from Hunterdon, Somerset and Warren counties. Other 4-H members participating in the show and sale – from Hunterdon: Marne & Emma Vernon; from Somerset – Lauren Fox, Angela &Kristi Philipsceck, and from warren – Courtney Sodtalders, Jenny Allen, and Kayte Empson.
The Hunterdon County 4-H Invitational Lamb Show and Sale Committee sponsored a contest again this year for a scholarship award. This year’s recipient was Matt Sheneman of Flemington, a member of the Hunterdon County 4-H Sheep Club.
