TITLE: HUNTERDON COUNTY Rug Hooking Guild Announces 4-H Fair Awards
Flemington, NJ, The Hunterdon County Rug Artisans Guild announced the rug
hooking awards for rugs exhibited during the 2010 Hunterdon County 4-H and
Agricultural Fair.
Guild exhibit coordinator, Dee Rosebrock from Lawrenceville, NJ, noted that
“Each year we look forward to demonstrating traditional rug hooking at the Fair as a way
to inform the public about this 19th Century craft. In addition, the hooked rug exhibit
allows us to showcase the work of our talented members and rug hookers from the
community.” Guild members and the public have the opportunity to submit rugs for
judging in four categories – traditional, primitive, miniature punch needle and mixed
media/three dimensional. Nationally known rug hooking instructors – Cherylyn Brubaker
from Brunswick, Maine, Jen Lavoie from Huntington, Vermont, and Diane Phillips from
Rochester, NY – served as the judges for the items exhibited.
In the Traditional Category, Gail Ferdinando (Pittstown, NJ) and Dee Rosebrock
(Lawrenceville, NJ) shared the Best of Show ribbon. Gail’s “Lucy” was a pillow
hooked with the image of her dog. Dee’s “Hooked on Bass” was hooked for her husband
who loves to fish. “Seaside Village”, a mat hooked with nylon stockings by Dee
Rosebrock, was awarded second place. The third place ribbon went to Kathy Donovan
(Watchung, NJ) for “Mola Bats”, an original pattern interpretation of Mola quilting as a
hooked rug.
The Best of Show ribbon in the Primitives Category went to Gail Ferdinando for
“Twins”, a rug showing strong bonds with her twin sister. Second and third place ribbons
went to Nellene Beaton (Toms River, NJ) for “Herringbone and “Liberty” respectively.
“Herringbone” depicts a fish bone design using herringbone patterned wool. The Statue
of Liberty design was done as a patriotic challenge with her sister and sister-in-law.
“Celtic Heart” hooked by Weezie Huntington (Hopewell, NJ) won fourth place.
The Mixed Media Award for Best in Show went to Cindy Boults (Annandale,) or
“C & C Tree of Joy”, a Klimpt design rug for her grandchildren. Second Place was
awarded to Barbara Dalrymple (Frenchtown, NJ) for “Summer Song” -- a floral footstool
designed to coordinate with a rug she had hooked. Ingrid Cosmen (Glen Gardner, NJ)
received the Third Place ribbon for “Our Pond”, a tea cozy designed by her husband
Franklin.
Cliff Ballard (Lebanon, NJ) earned the Best of Show ribbon in the Miniature Punch Needle Category for his “New Hope”, adapted from a painting by a 1930s New
Hope artist.
The ribbon for Best of Show Overall was presented to Dee Rosebrock for
“Hooked on Bass”
