HUNTERDON COUNTY Multiple, well respected business and finance magazines have concluded that in the current state of the economy most American families are taking vacations for a shorter period of time and are taking that vacation much closer to home than usual. With this in mind THE HC NEWS review team took off to the Crystal Springs Resort to see if this location might be an ideal family/golf/weekend getaway for Hunterdon residents, and we are happy to report that it has a number of unique qualities that  make it an ideal place to rejuvenate a hard worked soul.

Right off the bat we must mention that our contact person, Natasha Wright – director of marketing - was an absolute joy to deal with. She set up a flawless schedule of golf, arranged for a wonderful suite, made sure we ate in comfort and was available 24/7 for any questions we had. Our interaction with her made the weekend that much more enjoyable than we would have imagined.

Crystal Springs Resort - http://www.crystalgolfresort.com  is located exactly 52.8 miles from the bridge on Main Street in Clinton. If you travel up route 206 to route 94 during non rush hours it will take you an hour and five minutes to arrive at the grand Cascade Lodge - http://www.crystalgolfresort.com/content/category.aspx?SID=13&CID=169 

We hit Wild Turkey Sunday Afternoon at one, with a new group from Hunterdon that was refreshed and ready to go and ready to gamble and get the focus back into action. It was hot, about 94, so we made sure to hydrate in the clubhouse before hand and right of f the first tee we knew we were in for a treat.

Wild Turkey was arguably the best out of the five course we played with Ballyowen running neck and neck depending upon what kind of golf you like to play, links or more straight out in front of you. The reaction from the group, that included a low handicapped woman, a 10, and a 21 was overwhelmingly I WOULD COME BACK HERE AGAIN NO QUESTION.

In fact, if you were to play Ballyowen on a Saturday combined with the cascade nine and then warm up Sunday morn on the Cascade nine and then play Wild Turkey in the afternoon you would have a perfect golf weekend.

Wild Turkey gives you all sorts of golf options to play. You are uphill, downhill, over a lake, over a cavern, down a mountain, across a field. Pace of play was great, especially for a Sunday, we played in exactly four hours with a foursome and as most of you know Sunday at one o’clock doesn’t usually generate that. The staff, as we found all the time at the crystal springs, couldn’t do enough for you and they did it with smile, and much thanks to the young lady who put her hose across the top of my steaming head.

Wild Turkey can be played by any level of golfer, just pick your tee boxes right and anyone can enjoy it. While there is water it doesn’t kill you, the greens ran true with nice speed and the fairways were immaculate. Simply stated, we couldn’t say enough nice things about this course.  BRAVO –

TO THE COURSE  

Tee number one, straight down the hill, lay up short of bunkers and you have a fine approach.

As you can see the back of the green is elevated so you may want to take one extra club to get it back there.

Par three - club correctly and you will be in good stead, we had four balls within 15 feet

Left is dead on this par five and when you pull one into the forest you will be tempted to hit into the bunkers on the right, 3 wood is all you need to find the fairway

The pin swings left to right if you are lucky enough to have an eagle bid.

The fourth hole is straight out in front of you but give it a whallop, at 431 yards you have to earn it.

Second shot is a slight uphill to the stick

Aim for the bunkers and hit it hard, this is a gernous fairway that plays 450 downhill

Unless you blast one you will probably have about 185 from here.

THINK BIRDIE - this is a short hole that should present little problems. It has a hump before the green you should disregard, Hit the wedge in tight and write 3 on the card.

Looking back up the slope

Oh yeah - across the cavern. Here's a tip it play exactly to the yardage. Put the water out of your head and you can think Birdie second hole in a row.

This par five plays shorter than the yardage, hit a left to right and let it roll of the tee and you can have a go in 2.

This is the view from side of the green looking back. As you can see if you smash teh second and leave it a bit right you still have a lot of room.

A fine finish to the nine. it's easy to carry the junk so don't fret, the fairway is large.

Your second shot is uphill over the bunker but again you know the hole is easy when the entire four is putting for bird within 20 feet.
