HUNTERDON COUNTY NEWS |
Heron Glen - Located off of route 31 south of Flemington on the north bound side, is the county's only golf course. It was quite a battle at the freeholder level to even get the course built, but everyone who loves the links in this area is glad they did. This is no regular muni course, this is finely manicured, well tuned golf adventure. The course, as of July of 20009, is in fantastic shape. The rough is growing in nicely but not ridiculous, the greens are rolling true and probably faster than you think. The staff, from top to bottom excels. They do the little things, the carts have coolers with a bottle of water, and there is water at the rights spots as you go around. The beverage carts were around whenever you needed one. The starter was informative. The Marketing Director set us up with a set of rental clubs when one of the guys was late bringing two bags, so we didn't get held up. Everyone was polite, helpful and loved what they were doing. Without boring you to death all we have to say is that if you live in Hunterdon - THIS IS A GREAT DEAL - if you live outside the county its a destination point for the golfer. You will be challenged. First
hole is eye candy for the disaster off the first tee. To the right is out of
bounds environmental, to the left is the tree bank followed by the entrance
road. But relax, the fairway is wide, play a left to right off the left trees
and you will be perfect.
This is
the view across green one, as you can see it has a slight ridge line in the
middle so take that into that into consideration on your second shot in, which
will probably be about 150, so you can dial in.
This is a
side green view back up the fairway. You can see how right off the tee - left
here, is DEAD
Tee Box
on the par five number two. The architect definitely wanted to punish the slicer
as right again is DEAD DEAD DEAD Aim at the left bunker, its pretty far
out there.
This is a
shot just over that left bunker, which will leave you a blind second into this
area. The bunker on the left gobbles up a lot of balls but if you can hug the
left side of the fairway your approach will be easier, as you can avoid that
tricky little green side bunker on the right, which can quickly upset your day.
The green
is two tiered, watch out right, its a mess down there.

their second.
Third
hole - bang it straight and you have no worries, again, go right and the fescue
will tickle your chin.
How's
that for a dead down the middle drive. And that leaves you with, yep, a tricky
approach. take an extra club, if you go over you will much happier than sticking
it in the front bunkers.

Fourth
Tee. Finally Left is dead. This is a short hole, for the adventurous, grip and
rip, you may be left with about fifty yards in. For the cautious, take a five
wood or four hybrid and leave it in front of the right bunkers. It still eaves
you about 125 which makes this a BIRDIE hole.
And how
about a cold beverage. The cart gals were always around when we needed them and
the carts have coolers with ice and water to keep you hydrated.
Being the
smart person, the ball is laid up perfectly and you have this simple little 9
iron in.
A par
three that has multiple levels on the green. It nasty when its stuck upper
right. This lower left pin almost produced a hole in one, about 5 inches. Take
an extra club and swing smooth, a lot of folks try to get into it too much due
to the up hill and that sends shot wayward.

6 is a
great tee shot , you have to carry the bunker on the right, miss the ones on the
left and lay it on a small area of short stuff. IT may be the most challenging
tee ball on the course, especially for first timers.
Carried
it just far enough, with a horrid high floater.
This is
the ideal approach after a great drive. It leaves you 105 to the pin downhill.
7 is a
simple par three, but beware of the prevailing winds and take another club.
If you do
you will get three good shots at Bird. As you can see this is a pretty wide
green that slopes from back to front.
The tee
from the par five eighth. It's wide open, grip it and rip it. Same thing with
the second. two good ones can get you close, but get a little off line and
there is a waste area by the tree on the left that will gobble, and the traps
center right can leave you a tough approach in. Our fourth finally arrived on
this hole and disrupted the action a bit which is why we don't have further pics
here.
Tee Box
on nine. It's all right on front of you. A little left is better for the
approach but either way, get aggressive, this is another Birdie Hole.
Stop at the clubhouse - grab a dog and a beer and get ready, the back is a different adventure.
