HUNTERDON COUNTY - Often times when we set out on our golf reviews we are disappointed by poor conditions and a lack of attention to small details, but every once In a while we get an incredible surprise and Woodstone Golf Club, located just north of Bathe Pennsylvania, approximately, 53 minutes from the Town of Clinton, was just that.
Playing almost 7,000 long yards from the tips, including a myriad of up and down hillsides, this is a great test of golf that will challenge your long and short game as well as your imagination.
As soon as you pull into the drive off the backwoods county road you can tell that you are entering an oasis in the pennsy hillsides. The course is immaculately kept, right down to every single tee box, fairway, bunker and green.
When you arrive you are met by a fine young lad who takes your clubs and gets them set on the cart. He directs you to the large putting green, over 7,500 square foot, so you can warm up the flat blade and you quickly get a warning, the greens will be running fast so you might want to take out the 60 degree wedge on the neighboring chipping range and practice some back spin.
After getting the putting stroke adjusted the driving range is a 30 second ride up the hill. With both synthetic mats and crisply mowed grass you can pick your poison, but don't hit too many, you will need the strength for the battle that faces you, so limit it to a good stretch out of 25 shots and get focused.
You notice immediately off the first tee that you are not playing a course in Florida that has little or no undulation, this baby is so and up and down that it would make Bob Jones and his Augusta buddies smile.
The fairways are generous but many are not straight out and need to be hit with a fade or draw, which is fun, but difficult. You do not want to be playing into most of these greens out of the rough as there are hazards, bunkers and water looming all over. The rough is not impossible, you can easily find your ball in the 2 and half inch cut, but it is penal, you can't just go in there with a three wood hoping for the best. A short iron back to safety is often the wiser choice.
And speaking of water, its all over the place. A seductive stream running alongside a fairway, a pond that surround 60 percent of one green. A pond on the left of a par three that is not visible to the eye off the tee unless you pull hook and splash down, then you know it's there.
And another thing you must be keenly aware of is club selection. A lot of players like to be what one might refer to as macho and stick to hitting there one fifty five club from one fifty five, but when you are facing a hill that goes straight up the mountain you have to breakdown and take at least one, and if you are smart, two extra clubs. There are often bunkers in front of a lot of the greens and they are almost impossible to get up and out of. And I'm not sure if they put the pins where they did for the purposes of our review but we had a day six on the card and they were tight, on the edges, and required precise shot making, which was fun, for the challenge if not for the scorecard.
The last piece of this wonderful puzzle are the greens, rolling fast and true with some enormous undulations running through which made the tight pins ever more difficult. TI was so nice not to play over bumps, ball marks and other impediments that plague most courses.
The overall golf experience at Woodstone was made even more pleasurable by the staff, from the pro shop to the greens keepers, to the gal at the bar making the burgers, everyone was exemplary.
Have you gotten the point yet or do we need a few more positive adjectives. This is a great track which is well within the distance of Hunterdon. While they are currently a mostly membership course there is still the available daily fee at the moment until they fill out the membership, so give them a call and try to get on before membership closes. And also consider taking a look at their website and give membership a thought. If you press them at the moment you can probably get in at $350 a month which includes carts, green fees, range. These prices aren't going to last long though, so if you have interest get on the phone and give them a call.
You may also want to consider having a wedding on this beautiful site. There is currently a hotel under construction which is target to be going by later this fall, which would make this an ideal one stop shopping location for a nuptial site.

On Most reviews we give you an in depth hole to hole blow by blow, at this course I think we have already said enough about how well it played and how enjoyable it was, so lets take a quick pictorial visit.

Hole one
gets you right to it, a downhill sloping drive that must be long enough to give
you a chance to get over the pond in front of the green.
The view
from behind the first hole. You can see the fountain in the pond that protects
the hole.
Hole two is
a dogleg to the right, steep slope on the right and the tree line means you are
dead if you go that way, but beware, pull it left and there is a pond hidden
behind the close tree line.
This is what
we are talking about with the tight pins, try getting it close just over the
bunker with one right behind protecting deep. Many times on this course you have
to play smart, hit to the middle, try and two putt and move on.
Par Five
Third. Trees protect left side, bunkers protect right.
Two good
shots reward you with a third shot over a large pond guarded down the right by
the willow. Trust me, take an extra club to get close.
Fourth tee
seems fairly simple, yeah right, if you don't pop one off the tee you will be
left with 180 in and if you look below at the green,
You will
note that this is
No picnic to
hit.
Par three fifth, slightly uphill - take another club, but beware, out of your
eyesight on the left is a pond, and its close to the edge of the green.
The sixth
hole shoots you back up the hill, hit it straight or put bogie on the card.
Your second
shot in is again uphill and take another club.
The seventh
tee box requires a slight fade to hit the fairway. beware, the trees on the left
have a small creek running through.
You approach
is downhill, there is a small trough in front of the green that will stop a ball
you might think would bounce up.
The 8th hole
is a medium range par three that give you a break from the up and down voyage.
This is the first simple par on the front nine.
Nine is a
climb. A par five, first shot through the chute, the safe shot is a three wood
to take danger out of play.
You then go
straight up the hill, but as you see the meat of the green is blocked out by the
trees on the left, meaning your second shot should be played out to the right to
give you a better angle at the pin.
