It’s a day at the races in High Bridge!

The High Bridge Business Association will host its first Soap Box Derby on Saturday, June 14th at 8am.  The races will take place on Main Street.

The Soap Box Derby is open to children ages 8-16, and will feature two classes:  8-12 year olds, and 13-16 year olds.  “It’s a another great opportunity to bring people together in the community,” said Tom Fitzgerald, owner of Fitzgerald Architecture Studios and Secretary of the HBBA.  “Parents and their children have an opportunity to build something together and then have fun watching the kids race in it.”

The organizers of the event decided to have an informal format for the event.  The participants must create their own cars, which must have four wheels, and a braking and steering mechanism.  There are also car/driver combined weight limits for each class to ensure fairness.  Those are the only restrictions in the double-elimination race event.

“We decided the emphasis should be on the kids and the cars they’ve created, not strict rules,” said Joe Dispenza, President of the HBBA.  “We have a small number of rules to ensure safety and fairness, but much of the fun of the event will be seeing the creativity in the design of the cars and the kids enjoying themselves.”

The HBBA is also offering advertising opportunities for the event.  “This is a chance for businesses to display their brand in a unique event,” added Dispenza.  He indicated that sponsorships for the “Race Day” program are available, as well as for the finish line and even the hay bales lining the course.  “You don’t see this type of event anywhere in the area, so sponsors for this event would stand out.”

Registration is due by April 30th, and is open to the first 30 entrants.  For more information, visit the High Bridge Business Association’s web site at www.hbbusiness.org.
