Quite often Tom Hanks falls into a roll that just hangs on him perfectly. This is one of those. You can simply watch Hanks in his congressional cloth doing just about anything and when the movie is over you are still longing for more of his exploits.

Based loosely on a true story about a congressman who is overcome by emotion after visiting afghan refugee camps he sets about funding and underground war against the soviets. A cover budget that starts at five million dollars swells to a billion as Wilson's rebels make good use of shoulder rockets to shoot down menacing soviet copters.

Phillip Hoffman provides his usual sarcastic levity and movie star Julia Roberts makes an unnecessary budgetary appearance to boost box office but frankly adds little to the film.

There are no supreme effects so rushing to a big screen is not needed but

Charlie Wilson could be a nice pay per view film on a cold winter night that needs some levity.
