HUNTERDON COUNTY - You know you have found something special when the sign on the door says closed but the owner/chef of the operation comes out and tells you to disregard the sign and sit and eat, he will stay and make you a meal. Such was the occurrence at Pru Thai in Clinton which is located at eh end of Dickens Lane on old Route 22 across from the municipal building.
It used to be that you had to drive 35 minutes to Somerville to Origins to get good Thai food but the food here in Clinton is not good it is great, it is reasonably priced, it is a BYOB, which also cuts down on the $$ dining out experience and the staff is welcoming and friendly. Can we gush any more, sure we can.

THE first question I am usually asked abut Thai food from friends who are not familiar is what to order and is it too spicy. Well this review was not done on a singular dining experience it was done over a period of five visits, so let's see if we can give you some insight.
First - THE SPICE ISSUE - some people are afraid that there tongues will be on fire during the Pru Thai experience and it’s a legitimate concern. You can order spice levels of 1, 2 or 3. For your first few visits, and yes once you go one you will go back again and again, try number one or no spice - They will bring you a spice tray so you can season your own if you choose none. If you think you can swing it and like the spice try a two but please, the first few times don't get 3, it will fire you up and you will probably have a hard time enjoying the foods finer points. 3 is the highest level for a reason, it is not for amateurs.
Now what to eat - If you are dining for two, and did we mention the place is very romantic, dimly lit with candles, try the Pru Thai Combo which gives you a nice sampling and for some might even fill you up. They offer this for $13 and it more than happily serves two or three. The other Starters are $5 and $6 and I am partial to Kanom Jeeb, which are a dumpling like pastries
I have had four entrees and the were all delish. Crying tiger is a splendid sliced beef marinated in chili sauce for $12. They have three different types of Curry which are served with either chicken, beef , pork, vegetable and tofu and seafood. All are $12 unless you want the seafood which is $15. This meal comes in either Green or Red Curry or what they call Massamum which is a potato and roasted peanut sauce which is out of this world.
Some happy diners at Pru, asked for a comment and the first word was fabulous,
the second was you don't have to travel anymore for great Thai food.
Then they also serve what is called Sautee, which also comes in the above mentioned meats and seafood. My companions favorite is called Pad Basil but the generous Chef will let you put any type of combination together and a mix of fresh basil, mushrooms, peppers and cashews one night was dynamite. These meals also cost between $12 and #15.
For Dessert take a walk on the wild side and try the sticky rice, sounds strange but it’s a treat. You can also dive into golden bananas for $4 or pumpkin custard and you wont be disappointed.
Overall this is a gem that should not be missed and the HC NEWS gives it our highest rating for experience, quality of food and kindness of the people behind the scenes.
Hours Monday Through Sunday are 11:30 A.M. to 10 P.M. and they have some nice lunch specials that run to 3:30
