HUNTERDON COUNTY - I have now been convinced that there are certain things I don't have to understand to enjoy, and the raucous Off Broad Show Fuerzabruta is one of those things.
After viewing the performance on two different occasions at the Darryl Roth Theater, which is located at 101 east 15 st. in Manhattan which is the south east corner of Union Square, I have no idea what it is about. On the ride back to Hunterdon both of my companions tried to derive a meaning out of the many antics going on around and above you during the performance, but I didn't feel the need to indulge in such conversation and just let the performance be what it truly is, a fun romp.
The first thing I noticed at both shows was that this performance spans the ages. I found myself standing, YES YOU STAND through the entire event which lasts a little over an hour once it begins, next to people of all ages. An eleven, yes I asked, year old boy had his eyes gazing upward in amazement the entire show. A 73 year old woman to my left, yes I asked her age also, smiled and gasped at different changing sets that whirled around her. This feeling of being part of an ageless group is not always found Off Broad and it let one feel that the material wasn't too controversial, which sometimes happens when you venture toward the east village theaters, but interesting enough to get such a wide span of folks down the stairs toward the basement of wonder.
The actors, who all seem to be in phenomenal shape to keep up the shows frenetic pace, interact with the audience in a manner that makes you believe a story is going on when in reality there really isn't one, or once again maybe there was and I just missed it. The actors truly seem to be enjoying their work and you get the feeling that they would be doing the show for free if someone hadn't picked it up and produced it.
One note, and I am purposefully not telling you much about the actual goings on of the show so you can enjoy the twists and turns like a skier with fresh snow upon a mountain, but it if you are dreadfully claustrophobic this might not be a good idea as at one point an enormous hydraulic swimming pool drops from the ceiling to about 6 foot three inches from the floor, I'm six feet exactly and I could feel the tickling breeze very close to my hairline.
I think that Fuerzabruta is a fine example of why people go to see Off Broad productions. It is not your run of the mill Disney presentation. You have to be someone who appreciates venturing off the path and taking the one that is very much less traveled to enjoy this, but if you happen to like to challenge yourself and see what the different facets of young artists are doing this is one of the shows you go see because plain and simply, it is Exhilarating. On an Off Broad scale of one to five this is a very strong 4.
