2008 Hunterdon County Planning Board Awards Program

OVERVIEW
The purpose of the Planning & Design Awards Program is to recognize outstanding planning accomplishments in Hunterdon County. Hopefully, the recognition of these plans and projects will create an awareness of good planning and will encourage others to undertake projects of similar quality. Municipal bodies, organizations and individuals are encouraged to submit nominations for the program. The more nominations are received, the more successful the program is will be.

We are pleased to announce that the Hunterdon County Planning Board's 18th ANNUAL PLANNING AND DESIGN AWARDS. The awards will be given to those nominations for all existing and soon to be occupied projects in the County, as well as for any adopted land use plans, ordinances or completed projects within the respective categories.

Nominations are currently open until August 15, 2008. The Nomination form can be accessed on this page below in addition to the 2008 brochure. The Awards Event invitation will be also available below later in August.

2008 CHANGES

For 2008 we have streamlined the categories and are now accepting both plan and project nominations within each category. We have added a “Transportation award” category. The Board recognizes the growing issues of safely and economically moving people within the County, and the strategies employed by municipalities and other entities from sidewalk plans to mass transit. We will continue with the “Freeholder Partnership Award” developed from an awareness of the partnering efforts required in planning projects that increasingly require public and private sector or multi layered public entity cooperation and financing.

EVENT INFORMATION

For 2008 the Awards event is scheduled for Friday, September 26 will be held at the Clinton Holiday Inn Select, 111 Main Street in Clinton. The event will begin around 6:00 pm with nominated project displays; a cash bar; followed by a buffet and the awards presentations. More details and an invitation will be mailed and available on the website by mid-July.

ELIGIBILITY

Any project or plan that received final approval as of June 30, 2008 which is either completed or planned for occupancy by / in 2008 and any land use project (such as an ordinance, master plan or special study) that was completed by June 30, 2008 is eligible. Projects or plans with approvals or construction dates outside the guidelines will be reviewed on a case by case basis.

CRITERIA

• Plans and projects that harmonize with the existing physical environment (i.e. building design and materials; landscaping; scale of development, etc.).
• Plans or projects that demonstrate broad based public support
• Creative and unique plans and projects that promote progressive planning principles (i.e. creative plans that minimize traffic impact; unique ways to protect views, ridges and other natural resources; plans/projects that address special needs of the community).
• Socially oriented plans and projects that accommodate a variety of human activities (i.e. creating both private and public spaces, pedestrian walkways).
• New and innovative planning principles that can be applied to other projects (i.e. subdivision or site plan designs that preserve a rural landscape and can be effectively used for designing other developments).
• Plans or projects that incorporate or promote the use of alternative energy or other green technologies or sustainable planning tools and concepts.
