REVIEW - The Architects Club  has a design on great golf. back nine

After you stop for a bite at the turn you are faced with the easiest hole on the back nine. This is a short hole that can be played a number of ways. Going safe to the left leaves you a tougher  approach as you have the slim way in. If you hit a good tee ball 250+ go for the carry over the center bunkers which could allow you to run it up to the green. Even a spray out to the right leaves you a lot of green to shoot at. If you are trying to turn in a good card for the day you have to start here with par or better.

This par five could be called up and down and again it forces the classic golf risk reward situation. If you hit the ball to the right over the brown area above and fly the traps and thick rough you can get down in two. If you miss you can make 7. If you take the suggested route, straight up the fairway you will have to be careful with you 2nd lay up shot as there are tricky bunkers on the right that have more depth that your eyes show you, so bear down on the lay up and you will have 100-125 into the pin downhill to a big green. Play conservative and make a five, go for the gusto and flirt with the 3.  

Trouble trouble everywhere. This long downhill par 3 is protected front right with a bunker, front let with a bunker, far right with a large slope to nowhere and off the back down an even bigger incline. It looks farther than it is. There is no reason to over swing but if we all understood that things would be quite a bit easier. If you hit the green take a good run at the pin, the breaks are true.

Alister MacKenzie (born Wakefield, Yorkshire, England, 1870; died Santa Cruz, California, 1934) was a British golf course designer. MacKenzie was taught at Queen Elizabeth Grammar School, Wakefield. He trained as a doctor, and served in the Second Boer War. He then left medicine and began to design golf courses in the United Kingdom, in association with H.S. Colt. He was not a good golfer, and was one of the first men who had not been a leading player to become a prominent course designer. He published his book, Golf Architecture in 1920, in which he aphoristically summed up his design style: "In discussing the need for simplicity of design, the chief object of every golf course architect worth his salt is to imitate the beauties of nature so closely as to make his work indistinguishable from nature itself." [1] In the 1920s he emigrated to the United States, and he carried out his most notable work there, while continuing to design courses outside the US.

MacKenzie worked in the era before large scale earth moving became a feature of golf course construction, and his designs are notable for their sensitivity to the nature of the site. He is celebrated for his ability to produce holes with an ideal balance of risk and reward, and for his knack of producing courses which both challenge and accommodate golfers with differing levels of skill.

MacKenzie's unpublished manuscript The Spirit of St. Andrews, on golf course design, was later discovered by Ely Callaway, and published many years after MacKenzie's death; it sold very well.

So you've always wanted to play August National.............  here's your shot. if you watch the chase for the green jacket in early April you will recognize this par five that usually is a pivotal point on Sunday. You sit on the Tee Box and say what's so hard about this. Well the pro's usually go at the green from 225+ and the green is guarded by a stream in front and is a sliver at best.  the approach is very hard to keep on the surface is you don't have wedge in your hand. 

 

FOR SOME REASON WE DON'T HAVE PHOTOS OF 14  this is the start of a brutal stretch. 14 from the back plays 485 tough yards. It's right out in front of you but its hard not to over swing that second shot. If you don't get off the tee lay one to 75-100 and take your chances putting to one of the more friendly greens.

Another long brutal hole. This picture is taken from the top of the hill after a reasonably good drive. As you can see hugging the left side off the tee puts those trees into play. Spraying if right leave you a long tough shot. If you are one who bails out form trouble stay right on your second. Anything pulled into those trees are trouble. The green is long and has a large undulation through the middle.

We are still climbing the mountain. This 463 can easily feel like 500, especially if the prevailing wind is blowing in your face. Bunkers are all over this hill on the left but take an aggressive line just to the right of them or risk a very long second. This green is huge and welcoming to a long iron or five wood from the fairway. 

You can see the sand EVERYWHERE. You must take your time and pick the right club. It plays uphill into a breeze so don't be bashful taking an extra, though there are traps behind the green as well. The Bail out right still gives you a chance at a chip and a putt and keep you from some potentially hazardous sand shots. If your match is close this is a good way to create seperation.

The tee shot must be accurate as there are fairway bunkers on both sides. If you can thread the needle you will have a good opportunity for a final birdie. The second shot plays up so take another, but be aggressive, the green is big and its tilt welcomes shots.
