THE ARCHITECTS CLUB

Before playing this 4 person review of the Architects club in Western NJ I had had the pleasure of playing a few scramble tourneys here and it was always curious how out of rhythm I used to feel but I usually chalked it up to a day of mediocre swings and poor focus.
Looking at the course in a different light, playing my own ball instead of the best one and thinking about the different designers that the course was modeled at I came to the realization of why this is such a playable and yet difficult course, there is no continuity, and while that seems like criticism, in truth it is not. You have to dig deeper here than most spots because every hole has different character, a different idea, a different plodding of what your are supposed to do.
First things first - we were treated wonderfully from moment one. You had all the niceties of a private club, they took your clubs from the car set em up on the carts and got you going on time. You got a nice talk on the first tee about which holes are harder than others where the pins play etc…
The course is in great shape. The greens roll true. The fairways are mowed tight and the rough while penal is not overwhelming so you have an opportunity. Distances vary through the loop giving you a nice variety. While the lower handicap player had a better chance to score the high player was in the skins game throughout and had an enjoyable time. The course moved, we rarely waited, playing in just a bit over 4 hours. A full course description is below.
The newest thing about Architects is the clubhouse where no expense was spared. A short time ago a friend was discussing how there were very few places that are equipped to hold weddings in the Hunterdon Area, well that problem now has a solution. The facility is stunning. I had the pleasure of talking with a young lady who has used the facility for her nuptials in the past month and she couldn't have been happier with all aspects of the service and the guys didn't complain about playing the course the morning of either. You can get the contact info here - http://www.thearchitectsclub.com/2007/weddings.php
But the clubhouse isn't just a special event place its a location where you can dine all week with a long sunset view over the course. The menu varies but a few selections are as follows -
BRAISED BEEF TENDERLOIN RAGOUT
EGG PAPPARDELLE, ROASTED TOMATO AND RED WINE BRAISING SAUCE, CRISPY PANCETTA

So do yourself a favor and take a trip out to the Architects Club, its more than just a golf course, it’s a full experience - The Architects Golf Club - 700 Strykers Road Lopatcong, NJ 08865 - 908.213.3080
We thank

Thomas Mitchell "Tom" Morris, Sr. (16 June 1821 – 24 May 1908), otherwise known as Old Tom Morris, was one of the pioneers of professional golf. He was born in St Andrews, Fife, Scotland, the "home of golf" and location of the St Andrews Links and died there as well. His son Tom Morris, Jr. (d. 1875), best-known as "Young Tom Morris", was also a champion golfer.
Morris was an apprentice to Allan Robertson, generally regarded as the first professional golfer. He worked as a greenkeeper, clubmaker and course designer, as well as playing tournament golf. He came second in the first Open Championship in 1860, and won the following year. He followed this up with further victories in 1862, 1864 and 1867. He still holds records as the oldest winner of The Open Championship at 46. Also he was part of the only father/son couple being winner and runner-up.[1]
Morris played a role in designing courses across the British Isles, including Muirfield, Prestwick, Carnoustie, Moray, Warkworth in Northumberland, in the same year (1891) as Muirfield, Askernish links in South Uist and Rosapenna links in Ireland.[2]
There is currently a road in St Andrews, Fife named after him. The 18th hole at St Andrews golf course is named after the golfer in memory of his commitment to the course, and to golf in general.
Tom Morris was also the father of modern Greens-Keeping. He introduced the concept of top-dressing greens and introduced many novel ideas on turf and course management, including actively managing hazards (in the past, bunkers and the like were largely left to their own devices, becoming truly "hazardous"). In course design he standardized the golf course length at 18 holes (St Andrews had at one time been 23 holes), and introduced the concept of each nine holes returning to the club house. He also introduced the modern idea of placing hazards so that the golf ball could be routed around them. Before his times hazards were thought of as obstacles that either had to be carried or were there to punish a wayward ball.[2]
Old Tom Morris held the record for largest margin of victory in a major championship (13 strokes) in the 1862 Open Championship, which stood until Tiger Woods won the 2000 U.S. Open by 15 strokes.
first hole is a good
warm up. It's a short par five, if you crank the tee ball you can get down in
two. If you've just gotten out of the car lay up to about 120. This is one of
the flattest greens on the course, take advantage of it, birdie is realistic.

Charles Blair
Macdonald (November
14, 1855 –
April 21,
1939) was a major
figure in early American golf. He built the first 18-hole course in the
United States, was a driving force in the founding of the
United States Golf Association, won the first
U.S. Amateur championship, and later built some of the most influential golf
courses in the United States, to the point he is considered the father of
American
golf course architecture. He is a member of the
World Golf Hall of Fame.
In 1900, Macdonald left Chicago to live in New York, becoming a partner in the Wall Street brokerage firm of C.D. Barney.[4] With only a couple of exceptions, most golf courses in the U.S. at that time were laid out in rudimentary fashion, with little strategy required of the golfer. Macdonald, by virtue of his experiences at St Andrews and later trips to Great Britain, was determined (not immodestly) to build the most noteworthy course outside the British Isles. He searched Long Island for a suitable site to emulate the classic seaside links of Scotland, and eventually settled on a site in Southampton, New York (near Shinnecock Hills Golf Club) in 1906.[5] In 1908, he organized a group of 70 founders to contribute $1,000 each, and the National Golf Links of America opened for play in 1909.[6] Many of the holes were his versions of famous holes from British courses, a pattern he would repeat on later courses. Macdonald would tweak the course for the rest of his life, altering every hole somewhat over the next 30 years. The course hosted the inaugural Walker Cup in 1922, and is considered a landmark of golf architecture even today. In 2005, Golf Digest ranked it the #9 course in the United States.
With the National Golf Links course, Macdonald began collaborating with Seth Raynor, who would later become a famous golf architect (a term coined by Macdonald in about 1910[7]) in his own right. The pair would collaborate on a number of courses over the years, including Piping Rock Club in Matinecock, New York, the Yale University golf course, the Old White Course at The Greenbrier, and Mid Ocean Club in Bermuda (a course conceived to escape the reach of Prohibition[8]). One of the most famous was the Lido Golf Club, a course which took an enormous amount of effort to construct and had several unique holes, and was considered at least on par with the National Golf Links while it existed (a course by the same name exists on its location today, but it was built by Robert Trent Jones in 1947).[9][2][10]
In 1928, Macdonald published his book Scotland's Gift: Golf, which covers the spread of golf (prominently featuring himself) in the United States from its beginnings in the early 1890s to 1927, when there were some 4,000 courses in the country. It devotes several chapters to four of his courses, and gives his design philosophy. He is often called the "Father of American Golf Architecture".[11]
This par
3 is guarded on the left by trees which pushes you toward the right side
greenside bunker. Take an extra club as it's up up and away. The green is two
tiered so check the flag for positioning.
The Merion Golf Club dates from 1896, when members of the Merion Cricket Club (founded in 1865) opened a golf course in Haverford, Pennsylvania. In 1910, the membership decided to build a new course and chose 32-year-old club member Hugh Wilson, a Scottish immigrant, to design it. Merion East opened in September 1912, and the original course was closed. The West Course, also designed by Wilson, opened in May 1914. The Merion Golf Club did not officially separate from the Merion Cricket Club until 1941.
Hugh Wilson had never designed a golf course, so he went on a seven-month trip to Scotland and England to study British courses. Several features of Merion East are derived from famous British courses, not the least of which are Merion's distinctive Scottish-style bunkers, which are now known as the "white faces of Merion". Wilson's layout covers only 126 acres of land, a very small area for a golf course. It was ranked seventh in Golf Digest's "America's 100 Greatest Golf Courses" in 2005, and Jack Nicklaus has said of Merion East, "Acre for acre, it may be the best test of golf in the world."
Again
this isn't a long par five. Bunkers in play left off of the tee but wide open to
the right. In the second shot you don't want to get behind the tree clump just
off the fairway, if you do you're dead. The green is large, flat, protected by
bunkers, but ripe for the picking with two average shots at the start so don't
try and bite off too much.
This hole
plays longer than it looks. The bunker that runs across the middle of the
fairway is a good poke off the tee. The second shot rises up to a green
protected right by trees. this green has a lot of undulation. If you go over the
green there is a nasty bunker back there that you can't see and don't want to
visit. Be happy with par.

Bit off
as much as you can chew and you can chew a lot to the left in a risk reward
situation. However the reality is a simple shot off to the right still leaves
you a short iron in without the risk. The best play is right over the right
bunker which will allow you roll. The green has two sides. It is essential to
look at the stick. If you are on teh wrong side welcome to the three putt.

You get
the feeling that they had to jam the course in to fit the acreage on this hole.
Simple little par three usually playing downhill at about 120 yards. Toughest
challenge is to not hit it long. You can bump it up, fly it up or just hit your
normal wedge to the middle. If you do worse than par you've left one out there.
This gent is a
legend in the design field, but how they didn't put Baltusrol on the sign is
surprising - Albert Warren "Tillie" Tillinghast (1874–May
19, 1942) was a
noted
American
golf course architect. Tillinghast was one of the most prolific architects
in the history of golf; he worked on no fewer than 265 different courses.
Tillinghast-designed courses have hosted multiple professional golf major championships—the 1927 PGA Championship, contested at Cedar Crest Park; the 2002 U.S. Open, contested at Bethpage State Park; the 2005 PGA Championship, contested at Baltusrol Golf Club, which has also been the host of seven U.S. Opens; the 2006 U.S. Open, contested at Winged Foot Golf Club— and many others. Plus the 1935 iteration of the Ryder Cup Matches (Ridgewood Country Club). He died in 1942 in Toledo, Ohio.
This is
my favorite hole on the course. The drive goes down a narrow shoot protected by
trees on both sides. getting it out there 240 yards allows you to shoot straight
uphill at a large green that slopes back to front. It is a gorgeous hole -
enjoy.

Again we
have a rather drastic uphill par 3. Walk off the yardage on the tee from the
right side off the tee box and then add fifteen. The green is about 40 yards
front to back so again pay attention to the color of the flag.
Donald J. Ross (November 23, 1872–April 26, 1948) was one of the most significant golf course designers in the history of the sport. He was born at Dornoch in Scotland, but spent most of his adult life in the United States.
Ross served an apprenticeship with Old Tom Morris in St Andrews before investing his life savings in a trip to the U.S. in 1899 at the suggestion of a Harvard professor named Robert Wilson, who found him his first job in the America at Oakley Country Club in Watertown, Massachusetts. In 1900 he was appointed as the golf professional at the Pinehurst Resort in North Carolina, where he began his course design career and eventually designed four courses. He had a moderately successful playing career, winning three North and South Opens (1903, 1905, 1906) and two Massachusetts Opens (1905, 1911), and finishing fifth in the 1903 U.S. Open and eighth in the 1910 British Open. He later gave up playing and teaching to concentrate on course design, running a substantial practice with several assistants and summer offices in New England. His brother Alec won the 1907 U.S. Open.
Ross's most famous designs are Pinehurst No. 2, Seminole, Oak Hill and Oakland Hills. He was involved in designing or redesigning around 600 courses. Some of his early work was in Virginia and includes Jefferson Lakeside Country Club. In some cases he didn't even visit the site, but on the courses where he was most closely involved he displayed great attention to detail. Often he created challenging courses with very little earth moving; according to Jack Nicklaus, "His stamp as an architect was naturalness." His most widely known trademark is the crowned or "turtleback" green, most famously seen on Pinehurst No. 2, though golf architecture writer Ron Whitten argued in Golf Digest in 2005 that the effect had become exaggerated compared to Ross's intention because greenkeeping practices at Pinehurst had raised the centre of the greens.
Hold on
tight. We don't often suggest over swinging and killing your drive but here we
do. This baby goes straight uphill off the tee and if you don't make it to the
top of the hill you can't see the large pond that guards the entire left. Drive
up and take a look if you don't make it to the top. Your best move is to
probably bail out way right, but if you're only going to play here once take a
grip and rip 3 wood and hope you don't hear the splash. The green has a cavern
running through it and has 3 tiers that make par a wonderful score.
